To extend their nighttime use, lighting for decks and patios is often incorporated into a landscape lighting system. For safety and evening enjoyment, deck surfaces and stairs should be sufficiently illuminated and the lamps (or bulbs) used in the lighting system should be sight shielded to prevent eye pupil constriction. On many deck lighting projects, the lighting fixtures are mounted on deck posts and railings or under fixed deck seating. Moonlighting, with fixtures mounted in trees or other vertical surrounding structures, is often used to light patios.
