Downlighting, or more particularly, moonlighting, is a wonderful lighting technique used to produce soft pools of light on the ground, mimicking the effect of natural moonlight. Lighting fixtures are installed overhead, in trees or sometimes in the eaves or on the vertical surface of a building, and directed downward. Moonlighting is often used to provide illumination for pedestrian and vehicular traffic areas and can be a much more effective and attractive means of lighting hardscaping elements within the landscape than the “runway” type lighting created when only ground mounted pathway type fixtures are used along sidewalks or long driveways. The keys to successfully employing moonlighting in a landscape lighting design are the specification of proper lighting intensities, fixture spacing, and lamp sight shielding. Moonlighting is a favorite lighting technique of ours. It certainly beautifies a property, while also enhancing nighttime security.

“I would like to say ‘thank you’ for taking care of the lighting in our subdivision. You always do what you say you’ll do, when you say you will do it.”
